Santa Barbara Maritime Museum Lecture: From Operation Overlord to Is Paris Burning?
Erik Davis | On 20, Jul 2016
Author Henry Kreuter utilizes remarkable archival photos and firsthand accounts to tell the story of the 1944 invasion at Normandy that prompted Hitler to destroy Paris. After four years of occupation, Hitler wanted the Allies to find a pile of rubble where Paris once stood. The presentation discusses the passion and lives of the French Resistance members, the 20,000 Higgins Landing Craft that owed their heritage to shipyards in New Orleans, and General Dietrich von Choltitz, who had only minutes to delay his German explosive engineers from detonating the bombs that would destroy Paris.
